Cheap car hire in Faro is less about hunting for one magic coupon and more about avoiding the handful of small mistakes that quietly double your bill. The headline rate you see on a comparison site is almost never the price you pay — fuel policy, the insurance excess, optional extras and airport-counter upsells are where the cost really lives. The single biggest lever is booking early. Faro is the Algarve's main gateway and the airport fills up fast with UK, Irish, German and Dutch holiday traffic between June and September. The cheapest cars — the manual minis and economy hatchbacks — are a limited pool, and once they sell out you are pushed up into compacts and SUVs at far higher day rates. Next, choose a full-to-full fuel policy wherever it's offered. Under full-to-full you collect the car with a full tank and simply return it full, paying only for the fuel you actually use. The alternative — "full-to-empty" or pre-paid fuel — charges you for a whole tank up front at an inflated per-litre rate, and you almost never bring the car back bone dry, so you're effectively donating fuel back to the supplier. Then there's the excess, which causes more billing shock than anything else. What you should not do is arrive with no plan, because that's exactly when the desk upsell feels unavoidable. Finally, think small and think local. A smaller car is cheaper to rent, cheaper to fuel, and far easier to park in Faro Old Town and the tight resort streets of Albufeira, Tavira and Lagos — you rarely need an SUV to enjoy the Algarve. And in Portugal, smaller independent and regional suppliers operating out of FAO frequently undercut the big international brands on the same vehicle, so don't assume the famous logo is the cheapest option.
